A message Ad Hoc International Training and Service Committee

Dear ASRM Member,

Spring! It brings forth thoughts of renewal, rebirth, great thinks to come, even graduations! I was recently revitalized at a University graduation ceremony by the dedication and commitment of the faculty and students. The theme in the Public Policy department was quite simple - get involved. No matter how you do it or to what extent, they said, just exercise your right to citizenship and be a part of the action. Why? It's your privilege and your obligation.

Accordingly, the ASRM will expand its horizons and reach out to dedicated, young, enthusiastic surgeons in less fortunate areas of our planet who seek our guidance, our tutelage, our support and our reassurance. They will turn ideas into realities, assist countless patients in need, provide leadership and direction to their colleagues and make Dr. Sherman's goal of "building a global community of practicing surgeon educators" come to fruition.

You can be a part of this network, part of this microsurgical globalization and help those less accomplished and in their formative career years to reach their potentials. The rewards are enormous and can impact your life in so many ways. Just as democracy requires involvement to be effective, so does volunteerism and this is the year of the volunteer. Get involved - our society will provide the framework, the tools, the organization, but we need you to provide the training, the mentorship, the support and the guidance for these dedicated young surgeons. I have drafted a spectrum of opportunities for you to help, to get involved and to make a difference. If you cannot commit now, perhaps you will be able to do so in the future. I thank you for your time and support.
