2013 BRA Day

The American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery is a proud participant  of BRA Day USA and supports the message of “Team Approach” and “Know your Options”  while facing breast cancer.

1 in 8 U.S. women will be diagnosed with breast cancer*. Each treatment option has its own risks and benefits and can have a continued impact on ones quality of life.  Surgery may be an option you consider and may result in a significant change to a women’s breast(s).  Research has found that breast reconstruction is attributed to the patient’s improved self-esteem and sense of wellbeing.** There are options! Know your options!

What is Breast Reconstruction**

Breast reconstruction is achieved through several plastic surgery techniques that attempt to restore a breast near normal shape, appearance and size following mastectomy.

There are three methods of reconstruction: (can you use ribbon figure very small as the bullet points?)

       Reconstruction using implants

Reconstruction using the patient’s tissue only (‘autologous’ reconstruction)

Reconstruction using the patient’s tissue combined with an implant

What is a Team Approach?

The team consists of medical professionals that will work together from the time of diagnosis to the development and implementation of a treatment plan that best suits you. Your treatment options should be based on both medical and personal choices. Key members of the team include a primary care physician and/or gynecologist, pathologist, plastic surgeon, breast surgeon, radiologist, medical oncologist and most importantly, YOU as the patient.
