HARRY J. BUNCKE, M.D. (1922-2008)

Widely regarded as the "Father of Microsurgery," Dr. Harry Buncke revolutionized reconstructive surgery by developing microsurgical instruments and proving that small blood vessels and nerves could be sutured. In the 1960s, he reattached a rabbit's ear and performed the first successful toe-to-hand transplant, followed by the first scalp and finger replantations.

Through his pioneering work, publications, and mentorship, Dr. Buncke laid the foundation for modern hand, reconstructive, and transplantation surgery.
